Vitamin D deficiency soars in the U.S., study says.


New research suggests that most Americans are lacking a crucial vitamin.

Three-quarters of U.S. teens and adults are deficient in vitamin D, the so-called "sunshine vitamin" whose deficits are increasingly blamed for everything from cancer and heart disease to diabetes, according to new research.

The trend marks a dramatic increase in the amount of vitamin D deficiency in the U.S., according to findings set to be published tomorrow in the Archives of Internal Medicine

Too Little Vitamin D May Mean More Colds and Flu



MONDAY, Feb. 23 (HealthDay News) -- Forget the apple. The largest study of its kind to date shows that Vitamin D each and every day is what will keep the doctor away when it comes to the common cold or the flu.
The finding is based on an assessment of vitamin D levels nutritional habits and respiratory infection rates among nearly 19,000 American men and women.

Tanning Beds Provide Potential Pain Relief for Fibromyalgia Patients

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Ultraviolet light may help relieve pain in fibromyalgia syndrome patients, according to a preliminary study at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center conducted by dermatology, rheumatology, and public health sciences researchers.

A report on the study appears in the January issue of the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine. Steven R. Feldman, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Center for Dermatology Research at Wake Forest Baptist, said that this study was an outgrowth of a previous tanning addiction study in which participants reported anecdotally some improvement in their back pain.
